At NORDEN, we enable global trade by delivering efficient and reliable freight solutions across the world. As we expand our project cargo and breakbulk operations, we are enhancing our operational capabilities, and that is where you come in.
We are looking for a Cargo Planner & Port Captain who is motivated to work closely with both planning and execution of cargo operations. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective transport of cargo, from initial stowage planning to on-site supervision in ports. You will be located in our office in Chennai, India.
What is in it for you
Joining NORDEN means stepping into a role where you are close to the business and the operations that shape it. You will operate where commercial choices meet day-to-day execution, helping improve vessel utilisation while ensuring dependable cargo care and operational performance.
You will collaborate closely with colleagues across Commercial, Operations and Engineering, as well as external stakeholders such as vessel crews, agents and stevedores. We work in an active, pragmatic environment where decisions are made quickly and where ownership, dialogue and teamwork are key.
This role offers both operational responsibility and the opportunity to continuously improve processes and ways of working within cargo planning and port operations.
The task that awaits you
As a Cargo Planner & Port Captain, you will be responsible for planning cargo stowage and ensuring that port operations are executed safely, efficiently and in line with operational and commercial objectives.
Your main responsibilities include:
- Planning stowage to use vessel capacity efficiently while ensuring cargo care, stability and securing.
- Coordinating with Commercial teams and key stakeholders to optimise operations.
- Attending vessels and working with Masters, ports and stevedores during cargo operations.
- Monitoring operations and adjusting plans to maintain efficiency and minimise re-stows.
- Preparing core documentation (stowage, lashing/lifting plans, sequences).
- Ensuring compliance with safety and stability requirements.
- Supporting cost control and continuous improvement.
- Promoting a robust safety culture in all operations.
What you bring
You are a structured and operationally minded professional who thrives in a changing environment where planning meets execution. You are at ease making decisions, leading responsibilities and collaborating with multiple stakeholders across the value chain.
In addition, we imagine that you:
- Bring either sea-going experience (e.g. Chief Mate or similar), a relevant maritime/logistics education, or practical experience in cargo planning or shipping operations.
- Have several years of experience within shipping, maritime operations or vessel operations.
- Are experienced in cargo planning, stowage optimisation or port operations.
- Have worked with multiple stakeholders such as vessel crews, agents, stevedores and port authorities.
- Understand key aspects of shipping operations, including safety, commercial considerations and operational costs.
- Are skilled at evaluating information, working with plans and figures and weighing trade-offs.
