Funding of research and development

New challenges arising as a result of the increasing globalisation and a stronger general concern for the impact of sea transports on communities and the environment are prompting shipping companies to reassess and change their community position and accountability. The challenges are many and diverse. We are faced with major challenges in terms of pollution and relevant issues in relation to safety at sea and ashore. The question is how these challenges may be translated into concrete requirements for the shipping companies to comply with and how the shipping industry can develop the new skills and competences necessary to handle these challenges.

NORDEN has committed directly and indirectly to developing talent within the fields of shipping management, logistics and safety through foundation grants. This is done in collaboration with among others Shanghai Maritime University in China, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and Holy Cross of Davao College in the Philippines. NORDEN finances scholarships at the 3 institutions and also hires shipping trainees and cadets from them. More about Community Activities & Sponsorships

In Denmark, NORDEN supports the activities of the Danish Shipowners’ Association in order to attract talented people to the shipping industry.

Internally NORDEN supports talent development among employees via close cooperation with institutions such as INSEAD (France), Henley Business School (UK), Copenhagen Business School (Denmark) and IMD (Switzerland).

Other initiatives to promote knowledge sharing and strengthen competences in the shipping industry include:

PhD stipend with focus on competition and accountability in seaborne shipping

In order to promote knowledge in this respect, NORDEN provides resources to a PhD stipend with the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) focusing on the subject “How corporate social responsibility can be used as a management tool to achieve competitive advantage”. Danish shipping companies will be used as a case study. The project is incorporated in a larger shipping research group at CBS and is carried out under joint supervision of Henrik Sornn-Friese, associate professor and Martin Jes Iversen, assistant professor.

Decision3 - GreenSteamTM development project

As a part of the Danish Green Ship of the Future initiative, NORDEN collaborates with Decision3 on the so-called GreenSteamTM development project. The project started with a comprehensive analysis of the test vessel’s fittings and hydrodynamics. A data collection system was then installed on board the test vessel, and data collection was started under operating conditions and continued until the mathematical modelling tool was able to calculate the possible saving with adequate precision. The pilot project at a NORDEN tanker vessel was a success and NORDEN will implement the GreenSteamTM system (read article from Decision3) on some Post Panamax dry cargo vessels to cut emissions by minimum 2.5%. Article about the pilot project from NORDEN News Magazine Spring 2008

Good Working Life at Sea

In 2009, NORDEN was instrumental in arranging funds to sponsor the survey “The Good Working Life at Sea (in Danish)” where 1,700 mariners completed a questionnaire on their psychological working environment. The analysis brought light on 2 overall issues: non-compliance with rest hours and a feeling of social isolation. NORDEN has taken initiatives to improve both issues. The survey was conducted by Seahealth Denmark.
