&#x3C;h1&#x3E;NORDEN publishes its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report 2012 - Corporate News&#x3C;/h1&#x3E;


&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S has published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report 2012. The CSR report presents an overview of NORDEN&#x2019;s CSR Strategy, performance and future goals.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;NORDEN&#x2019;s CSR strategy contains 7 focus areas which are transparency, CO2 efficiency, vessel safety, employee conditions, environmental management, anti-corruption and responsible supply chain management.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Within the area of CO2 efficiency, NORDEN has a great focus on reducing&#xA0; CO2 emissions, as these reductions are proportionally linked with the reduction of vessels&#x2019; fuel consumption and hence costs as&#xA0; fuel costs in 2012 totaled USD 651 mio. &#x2013; corresponding to 67% of the voyage costs.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;NORDEN aims to reduce CO2 emissions from owned vessels, exclusive of vessels on contract to third parties, by 25% by 2020 compared to the 2007 level. This target is aligned&#xA0; with the target set by the Danish Shipowners&#x2019; Association. Since 2007, NORDEN has reduced CO2 emissions from owned dry cargo vessels exclusive of vessels on contract to third parties by 18.2% and by 14.2% from owned tanker vessels exclusive of vessels on contract to third parties.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The reductions are due to right steaming, which implies sailing with the optimal speed according to external conditions and time of call, technical improvements in connection with the implementation of NORDEN&#x2019;S 10 Climate Action Plan initiatives and investments in fuel efficient vessels.&#xA0;These reductions have been calculated according to the Cargo Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (Cargo EEOI) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under the UN, which makes it possible to compare the yearly CO2 reduction regardless of changes in fleet size. It is defined as the amount of CO2, emitted per ton of cargo transported per nautical mile sailed. NORDEN uses Cargo EEOI as it focuses on laden voyages and excludes voyages in ballast and port stays.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;NORDEN&#x2019;s score has improved significantly in the independent British non-profit organisation Carbon Disclosure Project&#x2019;s yearly and latest assessment of climate change disclosure practises. Scoring 90 points versus 82 in 2011, NORDEN is now ranked 7 (in 2011: 17) in the 2012 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index and is, also this year, the only shipping company in the NORDIC Top 10, which counts companies from Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. The index is a key component of the annual report from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Every year since 2008, NORDEN has reported in detail to CDP on our efforts in regard to climate changes &#x2013; NORDEN&#x2019;s 2012 CDP report is 50 pages long. With CDP as a communicator, NORDEN puts its environmental reporting at the free and unlimited disposal of more than 655 institutional investors worldwide who are backed by total funds of more than USD 78 trillion &#x2013; 78,000 billion! &#x2013; and who use CDP as a source when assessing companies with investment potential. Around 3,000 companies from approximately 60 countries report to CDP.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Commenting on the 2012 ranking, Ulla E. Nielsen, Director CSR, NORDEN, says:&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x201C;We are happy with this Top 10 ranking. Each year, we invest a lot of resources into further improving our reporting practise. The ranking from Carbon Disclosure Project shows that these efforts are also noted by external stakeholders and thus worth investing in. In addition, we are happy that our ranking in terms of our reporting practise is also supported by a top ranking in the CDP Performance Band where NORDEN is ranked B on a scale going from A to E.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;On 17 September 2012, NORDEN received a special prize for the way its Annual Report 2011 describes expectations for the future. The prize is instituted by the Confederation of Danish Industry and the Institute of State Authorized Public Accounts in Denmark (FSR). However, it was the participants in the conference hosted by the founders of the prize who decided to give the special prize to NORDEN. 3 companies &#x2013; chosen from all listed companies in Denmark and the 100 biggest companies in Denmark &#x2013; were nominated.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;According to the jury, the following goes for 3 nominated companies&#x2019; ways of describing their expectations for the future:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S has published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. The CSR report presents an overview of NORDEN&#x2019;s CSR focus areas, performance and future goals.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In 2011, NORDEN decided to strengthen its focus on climate by emphasising fuel efficiency as an essential element of its long-term business. Some of NORDEN&#x2019;s achieved targets and results are listed below:&#xA0;&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;ul&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Reduce CO2 emissions by 25% from 2007 to 2020 for owned tanker and dry cargo vessels. Since 2007, NORDEN has reached 38% of this target for tanker vessels and 55% for dry cargo vessels. NORDEN is thus confident that it will reach the full reduction before 2020.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Reduce the simple average sulphur content from 2.09% to max. 2% in total bunkers purchased in 2011. NORDEN has reached 33% of this target.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Become part of the Leadership Index in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) reporting. NORDEN has fully reached this target.&#x3C;/li&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;NORDEN receives Information Prize for 2011 from The Danish Society of Financial Analysts (DDF).&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Today, NORDEN received the Information Prize for 2011 from the Danish Society of Financial Analysts.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;Since the expansion of the group of shareholders in D/S NORDEN which commenced in 2007, the company has improved its information level to the share market significantly and now appears a role model for major Danish companies, and also for the global shipping industry,&#x201D; according to the motivation behind the prize-giving. This &#x2013; the Danish Society of Financial Analysts emphasises &#x2013; has already been recognised in connection with the Information Prize for 2009 and also with a number of other accounting prizes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;In spite of difficult market conditions, NORDEN has not reduced the amount of information given; on the contrary, it has published its focus for future improvements in its annual report,&#x201D; according to the motivation for the prize.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The Committee for Accounting Standards of the Danish Society of Financial Analysts emphasises the fact that NORDEN particularly lives up to the focus areas selected by the Committee for 2011, that is commenting on the effect of changes in input costs, a high level of detail in the interim reports with comments on the latest quarter, as well as easy access to management and relevant employees.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;It is pleasant, but also somewhat awe-inspiring, to be called a role model, said Carsten Mortensen, CEO of NORDEN, in his acceptance speech.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;This is not how we see ourselves. But we are always seeking to provide the NORDEN share with a label which is as clear as possible. And fortunately we have to this end a small team of dedicated employees within IR, communications and finance. They know their jobs really well. They know what is going on in NORDEN and in our markets. And they are therefore able to enter into a meaningful and qualified dialogue with you, just as they are able to prioritise and set a course. &#x3C;p&#x3E;NORDEN is pleased to announce that Felix Ng (Singaporean citizen, 45 years old) has joined the Company as head of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;/contact/shanghai/&#x22;&#x3E;NORDEN&#x2019;s representative office in Shanghai in China&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, titled Director &#x26; Chief Representative. He comes from a position as Vice President, Trading West (Europe, Americas and Africa) in Holcim Trading Madrid.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;China &#x2013; the world&#x2019;s largest importer of commodities &#x2013; is by far NORDEN&#x2019;s largest market. In 2010, 20% of all NORDEN dry cargoes were discharged in Chinese ports. NORDEN established its representative office in Shanghai back in 2002. Today, the office has 14 employees.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Felix Ng has almost 20 years of experience in commodity trading. He has held various positions within Holcim, which he joined in 1997. Before taking up the position in Madrid in 2008, he was based in Singapore and Beijing. He got his initial experience within commodity trading when working for Sinotrad Pte. Ltd., Singapore, from 1992 to 1997.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Felix Ng holds a university degree from Perth in Western Australia followed up by Holcim/IMD leadership program and senior management program.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;h1&#x3E;NORDEN wins annual report award for the fifth time - Corporate News&#x3C;/h1&#x3E;


&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align: justify&#x22;&#x3E;The prize &#x2013; C20 Regnskabsprisen &#x2013; was presented for NORDEN&#x2019;s Annual Report 2010, which according to the jury is the best annual report from the OMXC20 listed companies to describe a company&#x2019;s value creation, long term goals and operational and financial risks. The award is instituted by PwC in Copenhagen, but the winners are found by an independent and broadly composed jury headed by professor Thomas Plenborg from Copenhagen Business School.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align: justify&#x22;&#x3E;It is the first time C20 Regnskabsprisen is presented. It is the fifth time NORDEN is awarded for its annual reports. It also happened in 2002, 2007 and 2010 (two prizes), when the Danish business newspaper B&#xF8;rsen and the Institute of State Authorised Public Accountants in Denmark (FSR) awarded annual reports.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align: justify&#x22;&#x3E;The jury&#x2019;s reasons for awarding NORDEN&#x2019;s Annual Report 2010 include the following:&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x201C;By reading the annual report from NORDEN a reader of annual reports without previous knowledge about the shipping industry in general and NORDEN in specific is dressed to understand a company&#x2019;s value creation, long term goals and the risks taken by the company. This is done really well. (&#x2026;) To be highlighted in particular is a detailed analysis of covered ship days and the rates in the contracts compared to the market rates. Clear longterm financial goals are set, as well as it is clearly described how to reach these goals. (&#x2026;) The investor gets a clear impression of the company in which he has or might want to invest in.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align: justify&#x22;&#x3E;The award was presented to Michael T&#xF8;nnes J&#xF8;rgensen, CFO of NORDEN, who received it on behalf of NORDEN and had the following reaction:&#x3C;br&#x3E;

&#x3C;h3&#x3E;&#x3C;a id=&#x22;id3493484&#x22; name=&#x22;id3493484&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;This morning, NORDEN&#x2019;s Handymax vessel NORD MARINER discharged the remainder of 49,000 tons of road salt &#x2013; equivalent to approx. 1,630 truck loads - at the port of Kalundborg. Other NORDEN vessels loaded with an additional 0.5 million tons of road salt, are on their way to Northern Europe.&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The early and long-lasting frost has increased the demand for road salt in Denmark and Northern Europe. To refill the stocks of salt before the next frost, European salt purchasing agents have stretched their search all the way to Chile and Western Australia to find salt readily available and plentiful. The increased European demand has caused some fluctuation in NORDEN&#x2019;s salt shipments, and NORDEN vessels are carrying more than 0.5 million tons of road salt for delivery in Northern Europe in January and February.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Last week, the Handymax vessel NORD MARINER loaded with approx. 49,000 tons of salt from Chile, discharged approx. 2,700 tons at the port of Fredericia. Since Monday morning this week, the port of Kalundborg has been busy discharging the remaining 46,300 tons. The other vessels headed for Northern Europe are all expected to arrive in January and February.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;In 2009, NORDEN&#x2019;s salt shipments constituted approx. 10% of the Company&#x2019;s total cargoes. The salt is used for de-icing roads in winter, chemical production and the production of caustic soda. The large salt shipments to Northern Europe these months are unusual compared to NORDEN&#x2019;s regular salt shipments primarily going from Western Australia and Chile to USA, China, Taiwan and Japan.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The prizes are awarded by the Danish leading business newspaper B&#xF8;rsen and the Institute of State Authorised Public Accountants in Denmark (FSR). Yesterday, the awards were presented to Michael T&#xF8;nnes J&#xF8;rgensen, CFO of NORDEN, by the Chairman of the award committee and state authorised public accountant Eskild N&#xF8;rregaard Jakobsen, who offered the following reasons for giving the award to NORDEN:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;It is the award committee&#x2019;s opinion that NORDEN has prepared a consolidated annual report of high quality, which also contains a number of improvements on previous years.&#x201D; He also emphasised that &#x201D;the Management&#x2019;s review in the annual report is structured in a much better way with new sections on financial position, fleet costs and description of perspectives in the segments Dry Cargo and Tankers.&#x201D; Eskild N&#xF8;rregaard Jakobsen further said that &#x201D;NORDEN openly describes corporate social responsibility, and it is the opinion of the award committee that the outlook for 2010 is presented in a sober manner. With respect to the financial statements the audit committee stressed the good and adequate note on significant accounting estimates, which is separated from the accounting policies decisions made by the Management. Also, NORDEN&#x2019;s note on risk management is very comprehensive, informative and relevant considering the financial crisis&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

The renewed design is expected to be used on more future newbuildings.&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;A larger main engine and a larger propeller are the main ingredients in how NORDEN in cooperation with the Jiangmen Nanyang Shipyard (JNS), Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design and Stone Marine Propulsion has modified a vessel design to achieve a significant reduction in the fuel consumption on 2 of NORDEN&#x2019;s new Handysize vessels.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201C;According to our calculations the investments in redesign will be paid back in 4 years by the savings in fuel consumption. In addition to this, we expect that the design will increase the market value of the vessels. This initiative is a text book example of how environmental and economic concerns walk hand in hand, which is why we have had no doubts whether we should invest in this project or not. At the same time this is yet another step to ensure progress in our work in the climate area,&#x201D; says Senior Vice President Lars Lundegaard, Head of NORDEN&#x2019;s Technical Department.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Senior New Building Manager Alex Hjortn&#xE6;s from the Newbuilding Section in the Technical Department is the man behind the idea for the modified design. In short, the redesign consists of a larger main engine, which is optimised to a lower rotation speed, and a larger propeller. The design is developed from the principle that a large propeller turning slowly has a higher efficiency compared to a small propeller turning quickly.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The 2 new vessels, which will be delivered at the turn of the year 2011/2012, will also be fitted according to NORDEN&#x2019;s usual initiatives to achieve the most environmentally friendly design. These initiatives are generally estimated to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission by approx. 3%. On top of this comes one of NORDEN&#x2019;s latest initiatives; new antifoulings which will potentially cut off another 2% in fuel consumption and CO2, because they reduce the vessel&#x2019;s propulsion resistance in the water. On the 2 new Handysize vessels, NORDEN&#x2019;s calculations show that energy economy can be improved by approx. 15.4% in total.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

The vessels will predominantly be transporting bauxite to the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers in Eastern Canada where ice classed vessels are the only option during the wintertime.&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;In a very short time, NORDEN&#x27;s Panamax vessel &#x3C;a href=&#x22;/drycargo/fleetlist/nordpol&#x22;&#x3E;NORDPOL&#x3C;/a&#x3E; will be docked and rebuilt to be able to enter the icy waters of the St Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers. During winter, which lasts from December through April, the ice is often more than one meter thick, and is comprised to a large extent of fresh water ice, which is particularly dense. This ice makes the area inaccessible for vessels without ice class.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;NORPOL is to be ready and ice classed in the fourth quarter of this year, when the vessel is to sail for Rio Tinto Alcan until 2020. NORDEN will have 2 ice classed Panamax vessels,&#xA0;NORDPOL and&#xA0;NORDKAP, chartered out to Rio Tinto Alcan for 10 years each.&#xA0;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;/drycargo/fleetlist/nordkap&#x22;&#x3E;NORDKAP&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, which was rebuilt to sail ice in 2006, has been sailing for Rio Tinto Alcan since then during wintertime. This contract has now been expanded to include sailing during the summer.&#xA0;NORDKAP will be 100% chartered out to the company until 2020 as well.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

NORDEN was Monday presented with the Information Award 2009 at The Danish Society of Financial Analysts&#x2019; Annual New Year Event Dinner.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;NORDEN receives the award for its whole of information, which is impressive in depth as well as in width. NORDEN provides extensive and very detailed information which is conveyed to the stock market through annual report, web site, and through ongoing contact with investors and analysts,&#x201D; said Jens Houe Thomsen, Chairman of DDF&#x27;s Committee for Accounting Standards.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;This is the fifth year that NORDEN awards five scholarships to outstanding students from Shanghai Maritime University and two excellent educators from this distinguished institution,&#x201D; said Carsten Mortensen, CEO and President of NORDEN, as a prelude to the award ceremony, where the management of SMU took part along with students, staff representatives, and international guests from the shipping industry.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The scholarships and awards are every year presented by prominent guests and this year they were presented by Lim Hwee Hua, Second Minister for Finance and Second Minister for Transport in Singapore. In previous years the awards have been presented by Danish princess Alexandra, Danish former Minister of Business and Industry Bendt Bendtsen, badminton player Peter Gade and table tennis player Michael Maze.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

The collaboration encompasses two programs; a scholarship program for students and an award program for professors and educators.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;NORDEN Scholarship Program&#x201D; has been designed to encourage students to study enthusiastically and progress in academic achievements. Every year scholarships will be granted to third year students who display the best moral, intellectual, sports, aesthetic and academic qualities. Five students from multidiscipline maritime majors will receive an amount of 15,000 RMB per student per year. (The amount has from this year been increased from 10,000 RMB).&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;NORDEN Best Educator Award&#x201D; aims at encouraging faculty progess in education and academic research. The award will be granted to the professor or teacher whose faculty is nomiated as &#x201D;The Best Faculty&#x201D; by students at the University. A total of two professors will receive the award each year, with an amount of 8,000 RMB per winner per year. Winners are chosen based on their outstanding performance in teaching and education, academic research and integrity in morality and conduct.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

The new pool collaboration is to ensure NORDEN and its partner a leading position in this market.&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;NORDEN takes its first step towards the launching of a new pool of vessels together with Interorient Navigation Company Ltd. (INC) of Cyprus.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;At a ceremony at the Shanghai Shipyard, NORDEN&#x2019;s first Post Panamax vessel was named NORD DELPHINUS, after a star constellation in the northern sky.&#xA0; The naming was conducted by Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, who is the first woman in Singapore to become full Cabinet Minister in the Prime Minister&#x2019;s Office and, for a number of years, Minister for Transport and Finance.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201C;I am confident that this vessel will prove to be a great addition to NORDEN&#x27;s fleet, and at the same time, stand out as a symbol of good relationship between NORDEN and Singapore,&#x201D; said Carsten Mortensen, CEO and President of NORDEN.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;h3&#x3E;&#x3C;a id=&#x22;id3194765&#x22; name=&#x22;id3194765&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;Strategically important vessel type&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;NORD DELPHINUS is the first in a series of four Post-Panamax bulk carriers built for NORDEN by Shanghai Shipyard and China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC). They will be joined by four other vessels from other yards. The eight vessels will be pooled with additional eight vessels from INC. The pool will manage a joint fleet of at least 16 Post-Panamax vessels, including 12 newbuildings owned by the two partners in the pool. The pool will be launched on 1 January&#xA0;2010.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The new vessel type is expected to fill the gap between Panamax and Capesize due to its loading capacity and draft efficiency. Post-Panamax loads 85-120,000 dwt, which is more than traditional Panamax vessels and will be able to pass through the Panama Canal following its planned expansion in 2014.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201C;In many cases Post-Panamax will be a commercially attractive alternative for carrying coal and iron ore, e.g. from the east coast of the USA to the Continent, as well as from Australia and Indonesia to ports in India and Southeast Asia. We expect the Post-Panamax Pool within a few years to become among the leading suppliers globally in this strategically important vessel type,&#x201D; says Michael Boetius, Senior Chartering Manager of NORDEN&#x2019;s Post- Panamax section.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The collaboration with INC offers NORDEN a faster route to critical mass in the Post-Panamax segment. By pooling with INC, both partners achieve enhanced market coverage, and the ability to offer better and more flexible services and to generate important economies of scale. The Post-Panamax pool collaboration is an extension of NORDEN&#x2019;s partnership with INC in the tanker market, where the jointly owned Norient Product Pool has grown to operate 61 vessels with 14 on order. The marketing and commercial management of the Post-Panamax pool will be&#xA0; handled by NORDEN.&#xA0;&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Handysize is the vessel type in dry cargo in which NORDEN is expanding the capacity the most. In addition to the 10 newbuildings from JNS, NORDEN has&#xA0;other newbuildings on order until 2011. To this can be added that the Company also has 7 vessels with purchase option on long-term charter until 2012.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Handysize is the term for the smallest bulkcarriers of 10,000-40,000 dwt which transports alumina, fertiliser, cement, steel, pet coke, salt, etc. Handysize is the vessel type in which there are the oldest vessels, most scrapping and the lowest number of newbuildings on order. According to Clarkson Research, the world fleet counted more than 2,800 vessels at the end of March, and this number has been constant for years among other things due to record-high scrapping in recent months. The official order book only corresponds to 38% of the world fleet, whereas the average of the entire global dry cargo fleet is 70% and, in addition, the scrapping potential within Handysize is greater than in any other vessel type since almost 60% of the world fleet is more than 20 years of age.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;h3&#x3E;&#x3C;a id=&#x22;id3662733&#x22; name=&#x22;id3662733&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;Pool from the autumn of 2009&#x3C;/h3&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;In terms of demand, Handysize benefits from the fact the many cargo consignees do not wish to tie up unnecessary funds in major stocks of valuable raw materials, and therefore they decide not to transport on large vessels preferring just-in-time deliveries on the smaller Handysize vessels. At the same time, restrictions imply that Handysize vessels are alone in being able to call at many ports.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Like their future sister vessels from JNS, NORD SHANGHAI and NORD MUMBAI are of approximately 32,500 dwt, and this reflects that NORDEN is particularly focussed on vessels of 28,000-35,000 dwt. Along with the fleet of chartered vessels, the newbuildings will be transferred to the Handysize Pool which NORDEN has agreed to establish with Interorient Navigation Company during the autumn of 2009. The Pool is expected to start by operating 20-25 vessels, and the number will increase steadily in the years to come.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S has entered into an agreement to manage 5 Handymax and Panamax dry cargo vessels technically as well as commercially.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;The vessels have recently been sold through a private sale to an investor group. The vessels were previously owned by a number of subsidiaries which were fully owned by Britannia Bulk Plc. The contract with NORDEN is arranged by Nordea Bank Danmark, which has financed the deal.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;In accordance with the agreement, NORDEN&#x27;s Technical Department will handle crewing, purchasing, control/repairs, inspections, classification and authorisation matters, environment and safety, etc. The Technical Department already manages NORDEN&#x27;s owned dry cargo vessels and product tankers.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;According to the agreement on commercial management, NORDEN&#x27;s Dry Cargo Department will charter and operate the 5 vessels through its network of offices in Copenhagen, Singapore, Shanghai, Mumbai, Annapolis and Rio de Janeiro.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;NORDEN has, for the first time, chosen to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the most comprehensive global mapping of corporations&#x2019; efforts to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2. CDP is an independent organisation backed by more than 385 investors, with a combined asset base of USD 57 trillion.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;110 companies in the Nordic Region (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland) responded to CDP&#x2019;s 2008 survey &#x2013; up from 84 last year &#x2013; including 17 Danish companies. Only three shipping companies based in the Nordic countries are participating.&#xA0;&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201D;We are participating because we would like to tell our stakeholders about our efforts in the environmental area, and it also helps us focus our efforts&#x201D; says Senior Vice President Lars Lundegaard, Head of the Technical Department, at the presentation of the CDP Nordic Report at a conference in Copenhagen.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;At the conference, Lars Lundegaard summarised the motives behind NORDEN&#x2019;s environmental efforts: &#x201C;We basically think it is good business. It helps us differentiate our product offering to the market. It helps us sharpening our technical skills. We can attract better people. We save money on fuel, and we put our values into practice.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;So far, NORDEN&#x2019;s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions have been based on a 14-point plan setting out specific actions to reduce own vessels&#x2019; fuel consumption and, consequently, their CO2 emissions. Actions have included optimising the performance of the engines, reducing propulsion resistance and even better planning of routes and sailing. Target has been a 2% reduction of CO2 emissions from owned vessels in 2008. This target was met early October, and soon, NORDEN will define new areas of action and set new targets: &#x201C;We continue our efforts, and we remain ambitious,&#x2019;&#x201D; says Lars Lundegaard.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;NORDEN also strives to limit the negative environmental consequences in other areas:&#x3C;br&#x3E;
The average level of sulphur in fuel oil is capped at an average level of 2.7% on all ships under NORDENs control, including chartered tonnage, where IMO conventions allow up to 4.5%.&#xA0;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
Efforts also include environmentally friendly bottom paint only and exclusive use of double-hulled tankers.&#xA0;&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p align=&#x22;justify&#x22;&#x3E;According to CDP, NORDEN is not among the 10 best Nordic companies in terms of reporting environmental efforts. In respect to this, Lars Lundegaard says: &#x201C;The 2008 survey is the first in which we have participated. But it should be seen as a process where we improve both our efforts and reporting from year to year.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
